This month, we recognize Autism Awareness Month, a time dedicated to learning about autism, celebrating autistic individuals, and encouraging a more inclusive society. While awareness is important, the deeper goal of this month is understanding and recognizing the strengths, challenges, and unique perspectives of people on the autism spectrum.

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a developmental condition that affects how people communicate, interact socially, and experience the world around them. The term spectrum is important because autism presents differently in every individual. Some autistic people may need significant daily support, while others live independently and thrive in careers, education, and creative pursuits.

As someone who grew up in the Alleghany Highlands, I can honestly say there's nowhere else quite like it. This quiet corner of Virginia isn't just beautiful - it's home to me. Life moves a little slower here, and that's part of what makes it so special. In a world that's always rushing, there's something grounding about growing up in a small town where everyone waves, you bump into at least 3 people you know at the grocery store, and nature is always just a few steps away.

Whether you're a fellow local, a weekend visitor, or someone just discovering this area for the first time, I hope you'll find as much joy in these places as I always have.

Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego Smith Mountain Lake?

How many times have you thought about heading to Smith Mountain Lake, and then realized you have NO idea how to get here?

When you talk to any marina or park employee at Smith Mountain Lake, they all chuckle about the most commonly asked question when they pick up their phone:

"How do I get to the lake?"

These kind and patient people who answer the phones pause, take a deep breath, and then say:

"The lake has over 400 miles of shoreline. That shoreline covers three counties. Do you have a GPS or maybe one of those trusty old road atlases?"

Community Renovation Day 2024: A Day of Service

Recently I had the incredible privilege of participating in Community Renovation Day. CRD is an annual event headed by Renovation Alliance where volunteers come together to help homeowners who cannot afford to (or who are not able to) complete home renovation tasks themselves.

That Saturday, we came together to paint a large handicap ramp for a local resident. It was more than just a day of hard work; it was a celebration of community spirit and collaboration!
