My first memories of The Homeplace go back to Sunday afternoons with my family. After church in Buchanan, we would make the drive to Catawba for lunch. It was more than simply going out to eat, it was part of our family's routine.

It was tradition that made the meals that much more special!

Many of our visits were tied to important occasions. Easter Sunday and Mother's Day were times when gathering at The Homeplace felt like a natural part of celebrating together. There was something meaningful about sharing a meal there after church enjoying familia...

If there is one thing I love, it is finding fun ways to enjoy everything Smith Mountain Lake has to offer and the Virginia Dare is truly one of those special lake experiences!

Take to the Lake Aboard the Virginia Dare

There is just something magical about seeing SML from the water. The mountain views feel bigger, life slows down a little and even those of us who spend plenty of time around the lake can discover something new. Add in good food, cold drinks and a beautiful sunset, and honestly…what more could you ask for?

For more than three decades, the Virginia Dare has been a familiar and beloved sight on Smith Mountain Lake. This charming replica side-wheeler gives visitors and locals an easy, laid-back way to explore the lake. No boat ownersh...

My friend group consists of a handful of twenty-somethings who would be there for each other day and night. Luckily for...

I once knew a couple — let's call them Mr. and Mrs. Robertson.

They were in their 80s, still living at home, and like most couples who had spent a lifetime together… they loved each other deeply. They had been socially active for years, always on the go, always connected.

But over time, life began to change.

Health issues slowed them down. Their world became smaller — mostly trips to the doctor, the drugstore, and the grocery store. Many of their lifelong friends had either passed away or were dealing with serious health challenges of their own.

They weren't neglected. Their two sons were involved and caring,...

This month, we recognize Autism Awareness Month, a time dedicated to learning about autism, celebrating autistic individuals, and encouraging a more inclusive society. While awareness is important, the deeper goal of this month is understanding and recognizing the strengths, challenges, and unique perspectives of people on the autism spectrum.

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a developmental condition that affects how people communicate, interact socially, and experience the world around them. The term spectrum is important because autism presents differently in every individual. Some autistic people may need significant daily support, while others live independently and thrive in careers, education, and creative pursuits.
